Kevin Leahy is looking to get the voices of Canada’s middle managers heard. Leahy will be featured in the opening panel on Key Leadership Challenges in the Public Sector at the Canadian Government Executive Leadership Summit on February 25.
As chair of the National Managers’ Community, Leahy is looking to bring the perspective of the middle management community within government to the executive community with the goal of making middle managers more effective.
“We continuously take the pulse of managers across government and provide this perspective to senior executives,” said Leahy. “There tends to be a lot more candor when people are outside their silos and it allows us to provide senior mangers with a realistic lay of the land.”
Leahy, who lives in Fredericton, is also Officer in Charge of Major Crime Support Services with the RCMP. He has been with the National Managers’ Community since 2008 and became its chair in 2012.
“It’s a grassroots organization that supports managers in the government community,” said Leahy. “We provide them with the skills that they need to be effective in their roles with a specific focus on coaching.”
When we asked Leahy why he thinks leadership is important in today’s public service, he responded with the following:
“It all depends on your definition of leadership, but effective leadership is important because good leadership is how you get your employees engaged and you are never going to get high level of employee engagement, which is critical, without effective leadership.”
