Former Attorney General proposed as head of accounting oversight body
The province of Ontario has proposed a new chair to lead the Public Accountant’s Council. Former Attorney General Michael Bryant will replace second term chair John Crow for the position.
The appointment to the council, which regulates the province’s public accountants, is subject to review by the Standing Committee on Government Agencies.
Bryant currently works as a consultant at Ishkonigan Inc. He holds law degrees from both Osgoode Hall Law School and Harvard University and has a long history of public service, including cabinet posts at aboriginal affairs, economic development, and democratic renewal.
Bryant served as Ontario’s Attorney General from 2003 to 2007.
As attorney general in 2005 Bryant actually established the council. He also appointed its first members and approved its first standard for licensing public accountants.
“It’s important that public accountants be held to the highest standard, and I would like to thank outgoing chair John Crow for his years of excellent work in developing and maintaining those standards,” said current Attorney General John Gerretsen.
“Michael Bryant will build on this legacy by bringing his considerable public policy expertise to further advance the profession and maintain the public’s trust in the financial reporting practices of Ontario businesses,” Gerretsen continued.
