This issue features superb writing on key topics related to public service excellence including: • The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into public sector work • “Hidden threats” with respect to the implementation of AI • The role of the public service during a transition period • Portfolio and project management in departments • The regulation of online harm There is a lot to unpack and we really hope you enjoy reading this issue. Each article speaks to a specific set of challenges with respect to policy and/or governance and identifies ways in which the public service can respond effectively. We would like to introduce Evan Diamond as a new regular contributor to CGE. This issue features the first in a series of articles by him on the general topic of public service improvement. We would also like to send out a special thanks to Christina Montgomery, Vice President and Chief Privacy and Trust Officer at IBM. She was our keynote speaker at the DX Summit held last October. She gave an informative, dynamic, and thought-provoking presentation on the ethical, regulatory, and societal implications of AI and government adoption in Canada. She drew from her experience on these matters in the American context and provided examples that help shed light on the way forward in Canada. We are excited to include her presentation in this issue. Also, we’d like to extend a special thanks to Michael Wernick, Jarislowsky Chair in Public Sector Management at the University of Ottawa, for being a guest on the CGE Podcast. He is uniquely suited, as a former Clerk to the Privy Council, to comment on the role of the public service during a transition period. We’ve included the text of that podcast here in this issue. Happy reading! Dr. Lori Turnbull Deputy Editor, Canadian Government Executive
