The resignation of Chrystia Freeland, former finance minister and deputy prime minister, blew a hole in the Liberal government. She was his closest ally in cabinet and has been with him since the beginning. Her departure, which she marked with a letter indicating her concerns about Trudeau’s preference for “political gimmicks” over fiscal responsibility, emboldened others who questioned his leadership to come forward. Now, calls for his resignation both from within and outside his caucus are louder than before. Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democrats who have long propped up the Liberals, has announced his intention to vote no confidence in the government. It seems that Trudeau’s time in the Prime Minister’s Office is winding down, though he has not announced what his intentions are. Here are three options for how he could navigate the weeks to come.
