Since Confederation in 1867, more than 17 million immigrants landed in Canada of which the year to year number has fluctuated due to policy changes, Canada’s economy and to a large degree major world events. The two World Wars and the Great Depression saw a drastic decline in the number of immigrants opting to settle in Canada reaching the lowest point in 1942 with less than 8,000 landed immigrants.
However, with the return of peace and economic growth, the average number of landed immigrants climbed back up and has remained at a steady level since the early 1990s of about 235,000 per year.
