The aerospace and aviation sector in Alberta is on a path to significant growth, thanks to new federal investments aimed at fostering innovation, collaboration, and inclusion. More than $4.3 million is being allocated through PrairiesCan to support projects that will enhance manufacturing, open procurement opportunities for smaller businesses, and create career pathways for underrepresented groups.
“Municipalities, the private sector and post-secondary institutions are all part of the vital ecosystem for Alberta’s growing aerospace and aviation sector. Our government’s investments in these projects are helping empower cutting-edge research and commercialization, connecting local businesses to new markets, and breaking down barriers for underrepresented people seeking careers in this growing sector,” expressed the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister for PrairiesCan.
With a landscape of over 500 small- and medium-sized businesses, Alberta’s aerospace industry already supports thousands of jobs and contributes to economic diversification across the province. To accelerate this momentum, the Canadian government is joining forces with post-secondary institutions, industry associations, municipalities, and businesses, all with an eye toward bolstering the sector’s competitiveness and innovation.
“Alberta has a global reputation for excellence in aerospace and aviation thanks to the ingenuity, innovation and hard work of our small- and medium-sized businesses, innovators and talented workforce. Calgary Skyview is home to some of the best aerospace and aviation companies in Canada and are benefiting greatly from our government’s investments in the growing sector,” said George Chahal, Member of Parliament for Calgary Skyview.
In a recent announcement, MP George Chahal of Calgary Skyview, representing Minister Dan Vandal of PrairiesCan, shared details of five key projects receiving this vital funding. These initiatives are set to fortify Alberta’s position as a leader in aerospace and aviation. Here’s a breakdown of the projects:
– Strengthening Industry Connections: The Alberta Aviation & Aerospace Council is receiving over $186,000 to organize the Alberta Aerospace and Defence Conference, slated for Calgary in 2025 and Edmonton in 2026. This event will provide a unique platform for Alberta’s small- and medium-sized firms, linking them with global defense contractors to explore procurement and investment possibilities.
– Mentorship for Underrepresented Groups: With more than $100,000 in funding, Elevate Aviation is spearheading a new mentorship program. This initiative will offer personalized mentorship, networking, and professional development courses, creating pathways into aviation careers for underrepresented communities while helping meet the industry’s demand for skilled workers.
– Innovative Materials Research: The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) will receive over $1.4 million to establish a cutting-edge aerospace composite materials lab. This new facility will focus on research and development of advanced materials, aiming to boost aircraft performance while minimizing environmental impact. The lab will feature state-of-the-art equipment, and a team of researchers dedicated to pushing the boundaries of aerospace manufacturing.
– Mapping the Aerospace Ecosystem: Sturgeon County will use over $50,000 in funding to create a detailed report and ecosystem map of Alberta’s aerospace and defense sector. This resource will help local businesses navigate the supply chain and forge connections with larger companies.
– Electric Aerial Vehicle Development: Finally, $2.6 million has been awarded to UVAD Technologies Inc. for the development, testing, and commercialization of an electric uncrewed fixed-wing aerial vehicle, setting new benchmarks in sustainable aviation technology.
In total, these investments are expected to impact over 330 small- and medium-sized businesses across Alberta and support the creation of more than 360 jobs. They align with the Canadian government’s Framework to Build a Green Prairie Economy, which emphasizes local collaboration and sustainable development toward a net-zero future for the Prairies.
This initiative marks a significant step forward for Alberta’s aerospace and aviation industry, providing the support needed to thrive in an evolving economic and environmental landscape. With this funding, Alberta is poised to make strides in global competitiveness, sustainability, and inclusivity within the aerospace and aviation sectors.
