Canadian Government Executive is a magazine that proudly celebrates leaders in the public sector, and encourages best practices to encourage innovation.

Sometimes the best motivation to become a better leader, though, is a reality check.

Here are six ways to know if you are not a leader, and how to start acting like one.

Do others follow you? If no one recognizes your leadership, it isn’t effective. Can you recruit and retain the best talent? If your team members abandon you, then you have been a poor leader to them.

Do you get results? If you are constantly hitting a brick wall then you aren’t innovating. Leaders thrive on taking charge and getting ‘er done.

Do you get results by any means necessary? Leaders always get results, but they follow the rules. Real leadership means creatively navigating barriers, not mulishly breaking them. This includes keeping promises; integrity is key to gaining trust.

On April 4th, Canadian Government Executive is hosting the first annual leadership summit to celebrate leadership excellence among executives. Join us at the Ottawa Convention Centre, see the best contemporary leaders, and hear their thoughts on public and private sector excellence.
