The year 2015 marked the first rise in police-reported crime in Canada in over a decade with a notable 5 per cent increase over 2014. Police-reported crime is measured by both the Crime Severity Index (CSI) which measures both the volume and severity of crimes reported to the police and the crime rate which measures the volume of crime reported to the police per 100,000 population.
