Janice Baker, city manager and chief administrative officer with the City of Mississauga, believes the leadership provided by elected municipal officials is vital to the day-to-day well being of a community.

“Having strong leadership provides a vision for the future and ensures accountability for the actions of today,” said Baker, who has 26 years of municipal government and fiscal administration experience.

Elected officials, along with the public workers they direct, face many challenges when implementing this vision, however.

Baker says that maintaining infrastructure, changing demographics, maintaining the public’s confidence and fiscal sustainability are all obstacles that need to be met with the right leadership.

One of the ways Baker believes governments can find the right leadership is by being an employer of choice and focusing on leadership development and talent management.

Baker will be participating in a panel at our Leadership Summit, titled Leading in Challenging Times – A Call to Action, along with Vince Molinaro, managing director of Leadership Solutions Practice, Michael Graydon, president and CEO of BCLC, Jean-Rene Halde, president and CEO of BDC, and moderator Margo Hoyt.

Registration for our 2014 Leadership Summit is now open. If you wish to attend the event, please visit our leadership website to register.
