The Association of Professional Executives of the Public Service of Canada (APEX) has raised the alarm over public sector executives that have actively disengaged from their jobs, a number that is higher, on average, than the private sector.

An Ottawa Citizen article cites APEX’s findings, stating that almost 1/3 of these civil servants are simply watching the clock, waiting for the weekend… or for retirement. And approximately half of all executives in the public service think about leaving their job once a month or more.

“Reform of the public service will require the full commitment and engagement of executives,” stated Lisanne Lacroix, APEX’s CEO. “The degree to which they rise to the challenge will depend, in large part, on their state of health, which will largely be determined by the quality of the work environment.”

Reform of the public service is a popular topic these days, but it’s also not a new one for executives that have worked through previous similar initiatives. Without the energy and the leadership from the top, change won’t come easy.
