Atlantic Canada’s ocean technology sector is preparing to expand its global reach as companies head to Scotland for one of the United Kingdom’s largest aquaculture events.
With international markets becoming increasingly important in a more volatile and fragmented global economy, the Government of Canada is backing efforts to help Atlantic Canadian businesses diversify beyond traditional trading partners.
On June 16, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), announced $141,000 in non-repayable funding to Oceans Advance Inc. to lead a trade mission to Aquaculture UK.
The initiative will bring Atlantic Canadian ocean technology companies to Glasgow, Scotland, where they will showcase their products and services, connect with buyers and industry partners, and explore opportunities within the European aquaculture market.
Participating firms will exhibit together under a coordinated Atlantic Canadian pavilion and benefit from targeted marketing and networking activities designed to increase visibility and strengthen international relationships.
The mission reflects growing demand within the industry for specialized opportunities in aquaculture technology while supporting Canada’s broader efforts to diversify trade and strengthen its position in global markets.
According to the Honourable Sean Fraser, P.C., K.C., Member of Parliament for Central Nova, Minister of Justice and Attorney General, international expansion creates benefits that extend well beyond export sales:
“When we invest in Atlantic Canadian companies, we’re helping them reach new customers, grow their businesses, and create good jobs here at home. This mission to Aquaculture UK gives our ocean technology sector the chance to showcase its strengths in the global marketplace, while building the partnerships that support long-term growth and a more resilient Canadian economy.”
For Oceans Advance Inc., the mission represents an opportunity to showcase the region’s innovation capabilities on an international stage while supporting sustainable industry growth.
Shelly Petten, Chief Executive Officer, Oceans Advance Inc. said, “Oceans Advance Inc. is happy to support our Atlantic Canadian companies as they showcase world-class ocean technology to support the aquaculture industry on an international stage. This mission to Aquaculture UK in Glasgow creates valuable opportunities to build partnerships, access new markets, and demonstrate the innovative solutions our region has to offer. It’s a strong step forward in advancing sustainable growth and global competitiveness for our ocean sector.”
As Atlantic Canada’s ocean economy continues to evolve, the mission to Aquaculture UK highlights how targeted international engagement can help regional companies access new customers, strengthen partnerships, and position Canadian innovation in growing global markets.
