Sault Ste. Marie is positioning itself for a new chapter in Northern Ontario’s economic story—one anchored in water, infrastructure, and long-term industrial growth.
The Government of Canada is investing $233,100 through FedNor to advance the development of a public access deep-water marine port in Sault Ste. Marie, a project designed to strengthen transportation capacity, expand trade opportunities, and support the region’s evolving industrial base. The funding was announced by Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie, on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor.
At its core, the investment supports the next critical planning phase of the port’s redevelopment—funding technical assessments and a comprehensive port development plan that will guide the expansion and modernization of public access marine infrastructure in the city.
As demand grows for efficient, reliable movement of goods across Northern Ontario and the Great Lakes region, the project is designed to enhance the port’s ability to handle inbound and outbound cargo, particularly for resource-based commodities and industrial users operating in and around Sault Ste. Marie.
“Canada’s economic strength relies on modern, reliable infrastructure. That’s why we’re investing in projects like the Sault Ste. Marie deep-water port development, meeting immediate transportation needs while building the systems that move Canadian goods across the country. These investments protect our supply chains, and build a resilient, self-sufficient economy with lasting opportunities for Canadians,” conveyed the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor.
Unlocking Regional Potential
The development of a public access port is expected to open the door to new and expanded economic opportunities across multiple sectors. By strengthening marine transportation capacity, the project supports industries critical to Northern Ontario’s future, including critical minerals, biofuels, forest bioproducts, advanced manufacturing, and other emerging areas of economic growth.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the initiative also takes a systems-level approach to long-term success. Planned activities include building capacity among Canadian vessel operators, developing a governance model for port operations, and establishing a comprehensive development roadmap that ensures the port can operate sustainably and competitively over time.
For the federal government, the investment reflects a broader commitment to regional resilience—ensuring communities have the infrastructure needed to adapt as markets, supply chains, and global demand evolve.
“This project has the potential not only to create new economic opportunities for Sault Ste. Marie, but also to strengthen the local economy’s resilience. Last year, Transport Canada invested $405,300 in this very initiative, and today’s support builds on that progress. A diverse economy is essential for supporting communities, enabling them to adapt and thrive as circumstances and demands change. The people of Sault Ste. Marie are hard-working, and projects like this will help provide them with more ways to contribute to and grow the community we all care about,” expressed Terry Sheehan, Member of Parliament for Sault Ste. Marie.
A Strategic Moment for the Port of Algoma
For the City of Sault Ste. Marie, the timing of the investment aligns with a period of renewed national focus on infrastructure, trade corridors, and supply-chain resilience. As Canada undertakes major nation-building projects, the redevelopment of the Port of Algoma represents an opportunity to integrate Northern Ontario more deeply into national and international trade networks.
Modernized, publicly accessible port infrastructure is expected to help diversify the local economy, strengthen regional supply chains, and position Sault Ste. Marie as a key logistics and transportation hub on the Great Lakes—supporting sustainable development across Northern Ontario.
“As the federal government undertakes major nation-building projects, the timing for the Port of Algoma’s development could not be better. The project represents the opportunity for an important step toward a stronger and more diverse local economy, and we’re grateful for the support of FedNor,” said Matthew Shoemaker, Mayor, City of Sault Ste. Marie.
With this latest FedNor investment, Sault Ste. Marie is laying the groundwork for a port that does more than move goods—it helps move the region forward.
