Canada wrapped up a high-profile week of diplomacy in Panama by reinforcing its commitment to democracy, regional security and economic resilience throughout the Americas while announcing $35.3 million in new funding aimed at strengthening stability across the hemisphere.
At the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand used Canada’s national statement to reaffirm the country’s support for democratic institutions, regional security and shared prosperity. Throughout the gathering, she also met with key international partners, including Panama’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Javier Martínez-Acha Vásquez and Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, as Canada continued to deepen relationships across the region.
A centrepiece of Canada’s participation was the announcement of $35.3 million in new funding to advance security and stability throughout the Americas. The investment will reinforce Haiti’s Gang Suppression Force, strengthen maritime security and efforts to dismantle organized crime networks, support Colombia’s peace process and provide additional disaster relief following Hurricane Melissa.
The Minister also announced Canada’s ratification of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of Violence Against Women, widely known as the Convention of Belém do Pará. The move further strengthens Canada’s commitment to advancing the rights and safety of women across the Americas.
Regional cooperation remained a key theme beyond the formal proceedings. On the margins of the General Assembly, Anand co-chaired a ministerial meeting with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), where participants launched a renewed action plan building on the 2023 Canada-CARICOM Strategic Partnership. The updated plan advances shared priorities, including regional security and stability, stronger and more resilient economies, and climate action.
Before concluding her visit, the Minister met with Canadian embassy staff in Panama, recognizing their role in strengthening Canada-Panama relations and supporting cooperation on trade, security and regional development.
