Corporate Knights, a sustainability media and research company, has once again recognized the Royal Canadian Mint as one of the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada. Out of 332 surveyed companies, the Mint ranked 22nd for its leadership in key performance areas. These included such areas as revenues measured against energy, greenhouse gas and waste productivity, lost-time injury rates, paid sick leave to employees and diversity on its leadership team and Board of Directors.
The ranking for the Best 50 Corporate Citizens in Canada is based on 24 quantitative key performance indicators relating to:
- resource management
- employee management
- financial management
- clean revenue
- clean investment
- supplier performance

We are proud of the progress made by our Ottawa and Winnipeg employees over the past year and we will strive to find new ways to keep delivering for our customers and maintain profitability in the most responsible way possible.”
The Mint is a federal Crown corporation that is meeting its goals and setting long-term targets in the areas of environmental responsibility, diversity, and inclusion. One of the Mint’s recent and proud environmental accomplishments was becoming one of only 200 Canadian companies to receive ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Winnipeg facility. Work continues the achieve the same certification at its Ottawa operation.
Additionally, the Mint has struck partnerships with Canadian universities to help reduce and/or substitute chemicals traditionally used in the minting process. Along these lines, the Mint is also supporting investments in research and development that will improve refining processes in Ottawa and plating operations in Winnipeg.
In 2022, the Mint is working to accelerate its 3R strategy of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for waste management. They have set a goal for achieving a 42 per cent diversion rate.
The Mint is committed to making its circulation coinage manufacturing carbon-neutral by 2030. They intend to do this while continuing to produce and manage Canada’s circulation coins and their national distribution system which ensures access to coins for all Canadians.
Launched in June 2021, “ALL IN” is the Mint’s DEI Action Plan, making good on its commitment of placing workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion at the centre of everything it does. This comprehensive plan is designed to foster a work environment where differences are valued and where employees are empowered to take an active role in addressing systemic racism, discrimination, and barriers to inclusion.
From coast to coast to coast, the Mint is dedicated to giving back and helping to make a positive difference for Canadians. So far, it’s employee-led Recognition Medal initiative has raised substantial funds for Breakfast Club of Canada. The Mint’s Mental Health Medal project is currently raising funds for Kids help Phone with additional charitable initiatives on the horizon.
