The Government of Canada is making a significant investment in the future of Northern Ontario, with a focus on fostering innovation, sustainability, and economic growth. During an announcement in Temiskaming Shores on July 25, 2025, Pauline Rochefort, Parliamentary Secretary to the Secretary of State for Rural Development and Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming, unveiled a $863,023 funding package aimed at stimulating local and regional development. The funding, which is being delivered on behalf of the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor, targets key sectors such as agriculture and municipal growth.

“Northern Ontario is home to vibrant communities, innovative businesses, and untapped potential. Today’s investments are a testament to our focus to grow the regional economy – by strengthening the agri-food sector and showcasing what makes the North such a great place to live and work. Through collaboration with organizations like NOFIA and FONOM, we’re creating good jobs, supporting sustainable development, and laying the groundwork for long-term prosperity across the region,” explained the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister Responsible for FedNor.

A major portion of the funding, amounting to $702,713, will go toward the Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance (NOFIA). This initiative is designed to enhance the region’s agri-food sector by improving local value chains and advancing the adoption of cutting-edge technology. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices, NOFIA aims to increase efficiency while addressing key challenges in production and procurement. The funding will also explore the infrastructure needed to improve the storage, aggregation, and distribution of locally produced food, boosting the region’s agricultural output and market opportunities.

Pauline Rochefort, Parliamentary Secretary to the Secretary of State (Rural Development) and Member of Parliament for Nipissing-Timiskaming added, “Northern Ontario’s strength lies in its people – our farmers, entrepreneurs, workers, and community leaders who drive innovation and growth every day. This funding is about supporting them, helping communities thrive, and creating new opportunities close to home. By investing in local solutions and regional partnerships, we’re building a more vibrant, sustainable future for everyone who calls the North home.”

As a result, NOFIA’s efforts are expected to modernize approximately 120 businesses, creating up to 60 new jobs within the sector over the next three years. This initiative will also see the development of nearly 2,000 acres of farmland, stimulating over $1 million in additional industry investment and bringing substantial economic benefits to the region.

“This investment is a game-changer for agriculture in Northern Ontario. It allows us to strengthen our regional food systems, support producers of all sizes, and explore innovative technologies that will shape the future of farming in the North. By working together with communities and partners, we’re helping to build a more sustainable, resilient, and locally focused agri-food sector that benefits everyone,” said Emily Seed, Executive Director, Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance (NOFIA).

In addition to the agricultural funding, a $160,310 investment will support the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM). This grant will enable FONOM to produce and distribute 12 bilingual videos, showcasing the region’s business opportunities, skilled workforce, and affordable residential and industrial lands. The project also aims to highlight the many advantages of living and working in Northern Ontario, enhancing the region’s appeal to prospective investors and residents alike.

“Northern Ontario is full of opportunity, and it’s time the rest of Canada sees it. With this support, FONOM will be able to shine a spotlight on our communities, our workforce, and the industries that drive our economy. These videos will help attract new businesses, skilled workers, and families to the region by showcasing the unique advantages of living, working, and investing in the North,” stated Danny Whalen, President, Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities (FONOM).

Through these strategic investments, the Government of Canada is taking decisive steps to promote sustainable development and attract new business to Northern Ontario, ensuring the region’s long-term economic success and prosperity.
