Strategic funding from the Government of Canada fuels the development of cutting-edge AI technologies

In its ongoing effort to keep Canada at the forefront of global innovation, the Government of Canada is dedicating crucial resources to businesses, organizations, and leaders driving the rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to spur both economic development and job creation.

On July 4, 2025, the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and Member of Parliament for Halifax West, on behalf of the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, as well as Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced funding of $2,506,250 for three Halifax-based companies advancing AI initiatives.

“Atlantic Canadian companies aren’t just using AI — they’re turning it into real-world results. Whether it’s making our cities more efficient or creating good-paying jobs, these businesses are showing what it looks like when innovation meets impact. ACOA is proud to help them scale and reach new markets — because that’s how we can grow a stronger economy and build a future that works for everyone,” stated the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

“Supporting the development and adoption of AI by businesses is not just an investment in technology, but an investment in our future. We are empowering our local companies to innovate, compete globally, and create a brighter, more prosperous future for all Canadians,” added the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and Member of Parliament for Halifax West.

The recipients include:

Liveable Cities, a division of LED Roadway Lighting Ltd., is set to receive a repayable investment of $2 million over two years to create an AI-powered streetlight controller and camera system. This innovative technology will not only reduce energy consumption by up to 30 percent but will also provide real-time data to enhance public safety. The project is expected to foster job creation, support international expansion, and cement the company’s position as a leader in smart city solutions.

“We’re incredibly grateful to ACOA and the Government of Canada for their support through this $2 million repayable contribution. This support will accelerate the development of advanced real time traffic adaptive lighting solutions that will improve energy efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of public safety. At Liveable Cities, a division of LED Roadway Lighting, we’re committed to creating smart, sustainable technologies that help communities become safer, more efficient, and more livable—and this support from ACOA plays a critical role in making that vision a reality,” expressed Ken Cartmill, Co-CEO & Executive Vice-President of Product Development, LED Roadway Lighting Ltd.

Oberland Agriscience Inc. will benefit from $250,000 in repayable funding to implement AI-driven software and equipment designed to improve production efficiency, reduce waste, and enhance product quality. This technology will also aid in the development of new products and streamline formulations, all while contributing to a more sustainable future by reducing environmental impact and alleviating pressures on supply chains.

Kindred AI Inc. has secured $206,250 in repayable funding, along with an additional $50,000 in non-repayable support, to further develop its real-time emotional intelligence software. Kindred’s innovative tools help individuals track and cultivate emotional intelligence, with the potential for integration into a variety of products across sectors such as education and healthcare. The funding will also enable the company to expand key features and execute a targeted marketing strategy to broaden its reach.
