This trip underscored Canada’s commitment to international collaboration on security, trade, and economic resilience in one of the world’s most dynamic regions.
During her time in Tokyo, Minister Anand engaged in high-level discussions with Japanese officials, marking a pivotal moment in Canada-Japan relations. She met with Iwaya Takeshi, Japan’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, where they signed the Canada-Japan Security of Information Agreement. This agreement represents a critical advancement in the nations’ defense and security partnership, setting the stage for deeper collaboration in these areas.
Minister Anand also met with Hayashi Yoshimasa, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, to further explore matters of security and economic cooperation within the Indo-Pacific. These discussions aligned with broader goals of ensuring a stable and secure region while fostering economic growth and opportunities.
From Japan, Minister Anand traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Post Ministerial Conference Plus Canada, where she emphasized Canada’s ongoing commitment to working with ASEAN on shared global security challenges. Her speech highlighted Canada’s dedication to enhancing economic security, bolstering supply-chain resilience, and navigating the complexities of global security in a rapidly shifting world.
Amid rising global instability, Minister Anand reiterated Canada’s support for international law and ASEAN’s pivotal role in maintaining peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. In her remarks at the 32nd ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), she underscored the importance of the ARF as a platform for constructive dialogue on pressing issues, including the Myanmar crisis, regional maritime tensions, and growing instability in the Middle East.
While in Malaysia, Minister Anand held meetings with numerous officials, including ASEAN’s Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn and Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan. These meetings were crucial in advancing Canada’s bilateral and multilateral economic interests in the region.
One of the highlights of the visit was the engagement with ASEAN and Canadian trade negotiators, along with business representatives, to further the work of the Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade. Together, they explored opportunities for concluding the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement (ACAFTA), a key initiative aimed at strengthening trade and investment flows between Canada and ASEAN countries, providing Canadian businesses with new avenues for expansion.
